Protect Medicaid Now: Tell Congress to Vote No on Reconciliation!

Overview

This morning, the Senate passed a reconciliation package. The bill would cut Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act as well as SNAP food services; ban some forms of health care for trans people and women; and spend billions to target and detain immigrants. These cuts put people living with or vulnerable to HIV at risk of losing health coverage and access to care, which could cost some people their lives. The bill now goes back to the House of Representatives for its consideration, and the House could vote on passage as soon as tomorrow (Wednesday). We need to push back on Congress now so it does not pass these killer cuts!

Suggested call script:

Please feel free to change the script below as needed to best reflect your lived experience and/or jurisdiction.

  • Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I’m a constituent [living/working/caring for people] in your district/state
  • I am calling to urge [Rep. Name] to VOTE NO on the reconciliation package because it would harm people living with or vulnerable to HIV who need access to medical care and supports in order to survive.
  • [Describe how the bill would hurt you or your community and/or address some of the issues below]:

o   The bill would harm people living with or vulnerable to HIV by:

  • Cutting Medicaid, which is:
  • The largest source of insurance coverage for people living with HIV
  • The largest source of federal funding for HIV prevention, care, and treatment.
  • Cutting SNAP, which provides some people living with HIV access to food, which is vital for their health and well-being.
  • Making other health policy and program changes that would further reduce access to health care, lead to hospital and clinic closures, and reduce related jobs in communities nationwide.
