Overview
Over the past several weeks, there have been 3 key HIV funding issues the community has been advocating for. We urge you to join us in advocating for the issues below, including:
- Cuts to federal HIV prevention funding – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) failed to renew its HIV prevention grants to community-based organizations. This vital funding supports nearly 100 HIV prevention organizations nationwide. Without this funding, some organizations have already started to cut HIV prevention services and jobs. New cases of HIV are expected to increase as people will have less access to effective HIV testing, prevention, and intervention services
- At-risk federal HIV research funding – The HIV/AIDS Clinical Trials networks and Centers for AIDS Research (CFAR) have not yet received notices to renew their HIV research grants, despite a deadline of August 25, 2026. Without these grant proposals, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) cannot continue to support HIV research and clinical trials. Reducing funding for this research would result in trial participants being removed from trials before studies are completed, the loss of possible health benefits and millions of dollars of wasted taxpayer funds and disrupt years of effective research that has developed groundbreaking discoveries for HIV as well as other diseases, including cancer and COVID.
- Robust funding for federal HIV programs – Although Congress has passed a continuing resolution (CR) to continue funding the federal government through December 11th, the community needs to pressure Congress to protect and increase funding for HIV programs this year! Cuts to HIV programs would further reduce access to HIV prevention; reduce availability of care and treatment, including supportive services such as housing, food, and transportation; and put at risk vital research that has produced outcomes that could end HIV.
